What is steampunk?

According to its Wikipedia entry:

Steampunk is a sub-genre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date.

Antique welding goggles, Victorian dresses and corsets, watch chains, and three piece suits are all used in steampunk fashion. Palette includes deep reds or burgundies, browns and rust colors. Think a living sepia photograph with a steam driven steel Iphone. Barry Sonnefeld's Wild Wild West has some great steampunk fashion and imagery.
Captain James West (played by Will Smith) and U.S. Marshal Artemus Gordon (Kevin Kline) are attacked by an 80 foot steam driven spider sent by Dr. Loveless (Kenneth Branagh). Gordon is a little bit of a scientist and constantly tests his (advanced for the time period, but antiquated to us) inventions in the field. Here's Will Smith's music video from the movie:
