What if you had a shirt that was:
* Made of fabrics and fibers that are extremely strong.
* Very durable: resistant to most chemicals, stretching and shrinking, wrinkle resistant, mildew and abrasion resistant.
* Hydrophobic in nature and quick drying. It can be used for insulation by manufacturing hollow fibers.
* Retains its shape and hence is good for making outdoor clothing for harsh climates.
* It is easily washed and dried.
It's not a new wonder fabric, it's polyester, and it has been around for over 50 years. However, since its heyday in the 1970s, polyester has a reputation of being cheap, unbreathable and uncomfortable. The material is associated with cheesy leisure suits, mustaches and disco shirts with eyesore patterns. Today polyester is blended with other materials such as nylon in athletic wear and outerwear for its hydrophobic and quick drying properties. In 2008 the synthetic fabric experienced a little bit of a resurgence as European fashion houses purchased newer, finer polyester and polyester blend fabrics. But it doesn't appear that most people will get over their aversion to polyester anytime soon.
